Using QuarkXpress to Write Tech Docs

by Ivan Walsh on October 18, 2007

What software do you recommend using to create this user manual. I am trying to use QuarkXpress, but am having some extra special issues, such as anchoring pictures.

I guess my first question would be why not use Word?

In other words, what features do you need to write your guides that you feel Word cannot handle?

At some companies I worked for we had to create web content and PDFs from the source material, so we used products such as Madcap Flare, RoboHelp and Adobe Framemaker.

These are all great authoring tools, but very expensive, so you need to consider if you really need these before getting out the credit card.

I use MS Word for most of the guides I write. It gets knocked by power users but I find it does 90% of what I need for most guides.

QuarkXpress is fine for design and layout but its not ideal for entering text, which is what you’ll have in a user guide.
