Why Yahoo Ads is better value than Google Adwords

November 18th, 2009 · View Comments · Technical Writing

Why do you use Google Adwords? Is it because everyone else does? What if I told you Yahoo ads was better, well, would you be interested.

2cricketsI use Google Adwords. And I’ve used it, relatively successfully, for about 5 years. So, it must be doing something right.

Well, maybe not.

Some web marketing friends—way smarter than me—have switched to Yahoo Ads.

Why Yahoo Ads is better value than Google Adwords

Here’s why:

1. Yahoo Ads lets you put affiliate links directly into your copy.

You can’t do this with Google Ads.

Ok, you can get around this by cloaking the links, i.e. creating a webpage that redirects the customer to the affiliate page. But, this can be a pain, especially if the customer clicks on your ad and then doesn’t get redirected fast enough. Google is smart enough to track redirects.

2. Yahoo Ads are less expensive.

They’ve done like for like bidding and the keywords are cheaper on Yahoo.

With everyone stampeding to Google, well the bidding is always on the up.

Look at the price of your keywords over the past 3 years. Factor in inflation.

How much have they went up? 5%, 10%?

3. Yahoo is smaller than Google

Yes, Google has a larger reach.

But, this means you’re up against more bidders and fighting for customers in a crowded market.

Wouldn’t it be better to get your ads in front of a smaller audience for a lower price?

Isn’t that what everyone says. Get your product in front of a niche audience.

How to test Yahoo Ads v Google Ads

  • Setup a landing page for the Yahoo Ads campaign.
  • Setup a landing page for the Google Ads campaign.
  • Allocate $50 per week/month to Yahoo landing page.
  • Allocate $50 per week/month to Google landing page
  • See which gets the most hits.
  • Using this change the budget and see if this translates into more sales.

It shouldn’t take long to setup but could make a big difference at the end of the month.

Let me know how you get on.
