The WritersUA User Assistance has published details of its 2009 Salary Survey results, which includes a breakdown of salaries for technical writers and others in the tech comms field.
The average U.S. salary is $79,515 – 4% increase from last year. Salaries range from $14,000 to $190,000 and fall into the following quartile groupings:
Salary Group Salary
Lower quartile $14-62
Second quartile $63-78
Third quartile $79-92
Top quartile $93-190
Note: the WritersUA constituency is 10,000+ and probably is a fair representation of the overall user assistance community. The survey was also announced on user groups related to technical communication and user assistance.

I was surprised to see people earn up to 190k. It would be interesting to know what type of technical skills, experience these writers have. It would also be interesting to see if daily rates have gone up or down.
